Stephen Ministry, an international organization, trains lay persons to
give distinctive Christian care for people in crisis. A crisis might
be a time of loneliness, unemployment, depression, illness, stress, a
move, birth of a child, grief, divorce, etc., which lasts briefly or
is prolonged. Stephen Ministry is confidential. What goes on in this
caring relationship will remain private.
Stephen Ministers receive 50 hours of intensive training in many helping
skills and are involved in on-going supervision and continuing education.
A Stephen Minister meets weekly with a care receiver for as long as needed.
A Stephen Minister Is ...
- A child of God who walks beside a person who is hurting
- A congregation member with gifts for care giving, who was carefully
selected to serve in this role
- A lay person who has received 50 hours of training in providing emotional and
spiritual care
- A caring, Christian friend who listens, cares, prays, supports and encourages
- Someone who will "be there" for his or her care receiver for as long as there is
a need
